Hey there, everyone! Was wondering if it'* possible to totally remove the sterring column in a '99 (airbag aswell) and replace with a non-SRS column/steering wheel.

If anyone knows for sure and knows how to do the removal without deploying the air bag, please, let me know.

yes, it can be done. You can also remove the "bag wheel" and the clockspring harness and just replace the wheel.

Keep in mind that there were no columns made for our cars WITHOUT. And your insurance company can refuse to pay for injuries if you modify a safety device.

Is there a specific reason you want it disabled?

I'm also on the can't be done side. No columns made w/o airbag.

Now, if you have a medical condition or legitimate reason that you can't have a vehicle airbag deploy on you, then there are other avenues we could look at while retaining your current steering column.

92-99 Bonnevilles use the typical saganaw colmn that GM has used for a loooooong time. The only difference between an air bag colomn and a non-bag colmn is the addition of the clockspring harness running through the metal colomn (alongside the t/* wires and cruise/wiper wires) , and the air bag wheel itself. If you remove the bag wheel and the clockspring harness you have left the the same, basic colomn used on older GMs. You can bolt on any wheel you choose, aftermarket, or an older GM wheel. You will, however, have the airbag failure lamp illuminating on your dash.

Well....just wanted to get an aftermarket steering wheel...I have short arms so the air bag would probably do more damage than good when it deploys.

So...if I remove the bag wheel and clockspring harness, is there any way to trick the computer into thinking it'* still there? (SRS Failure lamp illumination would be pretty annoying.)

Remove the bulb from the cluster. There is no other way to disable it. You'll lose the passenger bag at the same time.

And be prepared for your injurance to refuse medical expenses for you and your passenger if they find out you removed a component or disabled the system.

removing a device that may save your life one day makes no sense...... this coming from a person who'* still alive due to one.

I know in Ohio, it is highly illegal to remove a life saving device from a car, not sure of Canada. Take our advice, changing out a steering wheel isn't worth losing your life over.

Some people (with short arms) are actually too close and may need/want this.

I would suggest checking into your local Providence laws etc to ensure you can legally accomplish what you are setting out to do.
