Default Spuddering/ wont drive over 25/ 1st gear

hey guys.. i dont know much about cars so i need help.. i just got a new gas tank out into my car since the old one was rotten. I drove it home a okay.. but on my way to work i noticed spuddering.. so i drove carefuly and it kept happening. its a automtic 96 SE... the car would go to about 20 mph the would spudder and not go anywhere... i stopped at my buddys house cuz i could barely move. I cheaked my Trans fluid and it was low so we went to the store and got some to see if that was the problem.. We filled it and i went to around the block.. same problem.. so i talked to the guy at NAPA and he said that these cars have a module that runs the transmission. he said that this could be the problem.. im guessing the since i jusst got a new gas tank the idiots who did it did not change the gas filter and its full of rust..? does anyone know if its the module, gas filter ( i think they call it that) or is the trans just junk???

Thanks

Change the fuel filter. If the tank is dirty, you may have to do it a few times before it'* cleared up.

I would replace the fuel filter first. The transmission is probably not shifting up because you are fuel starved and can't get over 20.

You can just drop the pan and check for metal shavings or heavy graphite like deposits. If not, then replace the filter and top off the fluid and give it a spin.

Please put your mechanical problems in their proper section. This is not a performance issue. Putting your problems in their proper sections helps people who know that series of Bonneville see your problem. As well it helps people looking through threads to find a problem discussed/solved. Thanks
