Should I have a spring in a PCV??

The spring in question is between the top of the PCV valve and the black plastic molding that holds the manifold pressure sensor. It holds the PCV valve in place to prevent vacuum and oil mist leaks. Without it you will have a vacuum leak and incorrect manifold vacuum readings. These leaks can cause all sorts of hard to diagnose problems. I just found out that my '97 SE didn' have one, and my transmission is happier now for having a PCV valve spring installed.

Wow... Great response.

The replacement UIM kit (APN version) did not have a spring and the old PCV did not have it. Normally, would you take from the old and install it in the new. Reason for asking should I be advising APN that the PCV spring was missing or not.

I will let you know the outcome once I find a PVC spring. Again appreciate all the help, this forum save me big bucks.

Cheers,

sure..give it a shot.

Shouldn't hurt anything that I can think of .. if the gasses push up through the valve or past the bottom of the valve.

Update:

The old UIM did not have the PCV spring. I managed to get a spring from the wreckers and the hesitation is gone. I replaced the UIM in '03 from a GM service and wonder if they forgot to transfer over the spring. Do you believe that for 3 years with out a proper PCV I have damaged anything with the engine?? Hope not.

Yes, I questioned the hestitation back twhen it was serviced by GM and they indicated that the system had allot of fluids because of the UIM coolant leakage and that it should clean its self. I guess after awhile I got used to the performance of the engine and became the norm.

There remains a hissing sound when i turn off the A/C heater and goes away when its on. I was able to trace it to the AC clutch by touching the outer pully and the sound goes away. I guess now i got another part to replace.

Again, thanks to this forum I was able to better educate myself on my UIM problem and apply the correct fixes.

Cheers to all "eh".

I must be under the influence. The piece that was missing was the PCV Valve. I still do not have a spring as per following thread pics. Do i still need a spring??

http://macgp.clubgp.com/howto/engine/pcv/gt/pcv.html

Also, the MAP sensor split into to trying to remove it. I was able to clean it from moist and dirt and put the two pieces together. Drove the car around and runs much better.

What do think should i buy the entire PCV Valve, Spring, and MAP sensor??? Does this come in a kit??

Regards,

You don't have a MAP built into your cap over the PCV? If you have no electrical connector or MAP, then you do not need one.

However..on a 98, I would expect both to be there.

98 should have a MAP, spring, and valve. I'd like to see a pic of what broke.

What broke was the MAP sensor. The top half seperated from the lower half. I guess from removing it from the PCV it split into two. I was able to clean the inner sensor which was full of oil and dirt. Able to put the two pieces together and re-install it into the PCV valve.

The only thing missing is the actual spring. The car is running better but i do notice that its vibrating more on the Hwy.

I cant believe that for 3 yrs I have been driving the car without a PCV Valve...

Whoa..

One minute you say w/o a spring..then w/o a map.. then w/o a pcv??

Please get a picture of what is there and what isn't, I believe there might be some confusion on which parts are which here.

Let'* get it straightened out and help you fix the issue.
