step back, leap forward - RadioShack (actually, the repair center they send the repairs to) got back to me yesterday (the day after the circuit board was to be ready) to say they couldn't obtain appropriate replacement LEDs from their inventory/suppliers. Yikes! I'm sure they're very nice people, but I don't think they have a clue.
Got circuit board back, went to big electronics store www.rpelectronics.com. They id'ed LEDs as 3mm Yellow (they look clear, but the very tiny yellow paint dot on side of each LED is clue) 3.6V (forward voltage drop) 20mA (maximum forward current) part # 55-534SB (yes, SB for Super Bright 1k-1.2k mcd, originals might not be, but brighter'* better, right?) package of 5 for $4
then to little repair shop www.rlelectronicsolutions.com, while I waited, they removed original LEDs, tested them, confirmed one was bad, tested new ones, confirmed new ones good and same color, installed new LEDs, $20

Spent evening replacing label illumination mini-bulbs (did all 5 just to be safe) in their little plastic sockets (good thing I'm near sighted), reassembled switch pod.
I'm about average height, normal driving position for seat is almost as far back as it will go, so when driving I'm looking at the switch pod at a bit of an angle, on a sunny day the indicator lights are very hard to see (also have sunroof).
It'* a sunny afternoon here in Vancouver, so I installed rebuilt switch pod, great success, all 5 switch indictor lights work, all 5 label mini-lamps work, and the super bright LEDs are significantly brighter than the original LEDs, the indicators are now easily visible even in bright sunlight. For what it cost ($4 parts, $20 labor) I would recommend replacing the original LEDs with super bright LEDS, even if the originals were all good.
