Default Security Light went off.

Mine just turned on like a half hour ago, I have no earthly idea why.... What sets that thing off? If I don't wanna fix it, how hard is it to just rip the system out, I don't need it, I've locked the car like three times....

It might be perfectly normal. Have you read the owner'* manual yet?

The security light isn't supposed to stay on all the time

Yeah.. It'* supposed to go off, maybe your starter kill switch messed with the vats and made it throw a light.

Mine comes on and off too in my 93. It'* a nusance. I'm going to remove my security system by chasing down the two wires that go up into the ignition assembly and solder in a resistor between the two wires equal to the resistance that I get out of the key pellets. A friend of mine did it in his Chevy truck and hasn't had any issues since.

You're talking about PasskeyII. That'* a different system than we're discussing here. We're talking about the factory security system (or alarm if you prefer that term).

VATS is the resistor-chip-in-the-key system that we're talking about here; however it uses the same Security light on the dash as the factory security system does when locking the car. So what the Security light means depends on when and where you see it light up:

Solid light when attempting to start the car: Wrong resistance of ignition key chip, or a bad connection through the key; car won't start until VATS alert times out in 3 minutes.

Solid light comes on _while_ driving the car: Circuit through the key has been lost for a full uninterrupted 60 seconds. (Car will not shut itself down.) Probably a dirty key or dirty contacts in the ignition key cylinder.

Blinking light while car is off, door open: Reminder only, telling you to lock the car, which will activate its Security system 20 seconds after the door closes. Triggering the security system after that will cause horn honking and light flashing until the correct key is used to start the car (possibly also using the key in the door lock will get it to shut up; I don't remember).
