That whine is trademark. That'* the sign of a force-fed engine. They all whine. You should be able to hear it in the cockpit. What you want to listen for is a rattling at idle....an indication of a supercharger coupler going out (not likely with your car yet) or a grinding/rumbling.....bad sounds. If you don't have these sounds, and do have the whine, and you're making 9-10 psi of boost, you're in good shape!
I think this comes from the early superchargers, like on the 92-95 models, which tend to leak. Once the oil all leaks out, the bearings are no longer lubricated and grind themselves up. I don't think people knew how to maintain the */C. The owners aren't totally to blame. Pontiac did not include */C maintenance in the 92 or 93 maintenance schedules that came with the car.
