Rough Idle fixed

well you all know lakevilles old ssei had a bad idle i did evey thing i could to fix it nothing worked till today. he had a rice pipe and open fillter on it . so i made a small custom box to cover it so it would not suck in heat from engine. when i put it on and put the fillter back on and closed it up the car idles fine now . so i was thinking could the car have been sucking in to much air at idle. i hope this helps some one with the same problem

Temperature of the incoming air won't affect the idle quality at all. Especially this time of year. Nor can the intake pull in 'too much' air at idle, unless the IAC is faulty, and it would set a code.

I think we need more information on your problem and symptoms, and then maybe move this to the 92-99 mechanical section.

i know the temp has nothing to do with idle. the car sounds like it has a cam at idle but runs good when above 1200 rpms.but i got it fixed now. and i dont know nothing about f.i.but i thought the computer controlled the idle. and if it was sucking in to much air it would try to ajust fuel thinkin it was under load .maken it idle up and down .when i closed off the air fillter it is not suckin in as much air as it was same thing happen when i was doing the p.e.m's and left a towel over the air fillter and started the car it ran fine tell i seen i left the towel over the fillter and removed it then it startede idleing rough agine. but it is fixed now. i just wonted to share this info my be it works or not but it wont hurt the car to inclose the rice pipe and filter from engine heat thanks for the help zilla...i will learn from stuf like this.and no codes at this point in time lol

The computer knows it's not under load from the gear selector. In P or N, there can be no load.

There is no such thing as too much air unless you have a code set for an idle condition or lean condition.

It sounds to me from your symptoms that the IAC is not controlling the idle air quantity correctly. I'll move your topic to the 92-99 section so the Gearheads can find it and take a crack at the problem. My personal experience and advice at this point would be to remove your throttle body and MAF sensor, and clean them per the instructions in Techinfo. It'll cost you a couple hours and a throttle body gasket. After that, if the problem persists, replacing the IAC with a known good unit may help.

Your solution may have actually hurt performance if you prevented any amount of airflow. You want as much air as you can possible get, but protected from the heat of the engine bay.

the box is just like yours but it dont have the kool letters on it.

willwren 03-08-2007 11:00 PM

The box has nothing to do with the idle quality unless the car stalls from lack of air due to a poor quality ricerzone filter. (My box has been retired to my SLE in favor of a better option)

What filter do you have?

adam marcum 03-08-2007 11:05 PM

i have no idea its one nate had on it i will get another one what kind k&n

willwren 03-08-2007 11:58 PM

If you don't know what it is, why are you replacing it? If it's a good filter, you're throwing your money away. And we haven't even had a chance to help you troubleshoot to the root cause.

No spending yet. Let's talk it out with the Gearheads.

Wren..it's Nate's old car. They traded. No matter what Nate did...he couldn't get it to idle decently. Somehow...messing with the airfilter helped..wow.

willwren 03-09-2007 07:52 AM

I don't see it. The car should idle beautifully with no air filter at all.
