The RPM'* are supposed to drop when you're in gear and stopped

As for the smoothness.......Check your vaccum lines for leaks.

After checking for vacuum leaks, I would say the next step is to clean your throttle body. Does the engine stumble an excessive amount when the AC compressor kicks in?

Good call JDB

If those 2 ideas fail...check your intake bolts and make sure they are tight.

Kennginn, maybe you should tell him HOW and WHAT to check on the MAF, with all the proper procedures and warnings?

U can use this link to a thread to clean out you TB as JDB had mentioned, and also for cleaning the small filaments on the MAF sensor to clean them.
BE CAREFULL WHILE CLEANING THE FILAMENTS!!! THEY ARE EXTREMELY FRAGILE.
