Hello all.

My car has suddenly started idling very roughly. Driveability is unaffected. Sometimes the car will die at least once when I cold start it. The SES light comes and goes which is indicative of an intermittent problem.

The only way I know to pull the ECM codes is going through the dealer and they want $85!

Try an AutoZone, Advance Auto, or a local friendly mechanic (they will usually scan for free). Find out what the codes are, report them back here, and a vet will jump in with some heavy advice.

Maybe a vacume leak?

Autozone says they can't scan the codes on a vehicle older than 1996. Is that true?

A vacuum leak was my first thought so I checked all the hoses and they look fine. If it is a vacuum leak, it would have to be a manifold gasket or something along those lines.

You need a better AutoZone - One with an OBD1 scanner....

Anyone know of a nearby autozone who can help? Last year I tried a different autozone on TV highway but the guy said the computer was unresponsive and he couldn't connect to it. This really bothers me. I'm wondering if I need a new ECM.

correct Autozone cant rerad the OBDII, go to Advance, they can read both but I have had trouble reading the 1/2 on my friends Century

I've checked and there are NO Advance auto parts stores in the Western US.

Any other suggestions?

Call whatever the local parts stores are named. Ask if they can read OBD1.

check it yourself go to techinfo and type in pcm codes and they will tell u how to check on this website i do it to mine so yea... do that lol
