Not really. When your fluid is low, there's not enough in the pan to reach the pickup, thus starving the trans of fluid and dropping pressure. That's not a "safety measure", it's a symptom of an underfilled transmission. It's doing a little bit of damage every time you do that. Even though the trans works when you fill it to the proper level, each time you starved it lessened the life of it, if only by just a little bit.

Mine sort did when it develop leak in line to the stock cooler.

Lets look at it ths way... Low on fluid, the trans can't pick up the fluid in the pan... It takes in air and fluid and they mix creating little bubbles... This willnot keep the trans lubricated, nor will it keep oall of the passages / circuits full for the clutch pack apply( Not a trans guy but it sounds good doesn't it )....

I have seen a couple that ran the trans low on fluid and the end result was a damaged trans that would hardly move the car.... Upon removing the trans pan, most of the friction material was in the pan...

Lets keep in mind, This Is In No Way A Saftey Feature... If the trans is low on fluid and you hit a neautral of sorts, you are doing that trans no good..

I had this problem one time on my 91 LE... As soon as I got through the door I grabbed a papertowel and checkd the fluid... I too was low... I have never had the issue again..

And we may need to get a techinfo on the tranny fluid checking procedure..
