I know its illegal, but has anyone done it? If so how much louder is it? Enough to attract the police?

Shouldn't be too noticeable. Most of the sound is taken care of by the muffler. Getting pretty bad now?

No its not the cat, read the "Oh Crap!" thread. Its just that the mechanic is willing to do something about the CAT tomarrow. Maybe bypass it by punching through it with a straight pipe or just removing it all together.

To be "legal" I rather punch it.

I have no cat or resonator on mine. I also have 3" exhaust pipe and a straight thru muffler. It is probably a little noisier that you would want for the typical family cruiser but it isn't overbearingly load either. It has a GREAT rumble at idle but picks up to a little higherpitch as you drive. You could run straight pipes on a Bonneville as long as you don't "drop the hammer" in front of a cop, then they'll know.

So basically, I did it here in MN and I haven't had a problem with the noise level yet.

Hmm....thanks for the input. I'll see how willing the mechanics are, because its hard to find one that will do it for you.

However I heard some shops won't work on a car if there is no CAT. Is this rubbish or possibly the truth?

Find one that will make it a blot up so you can easily remive and replace and Tell the machinacs that you are doing this for better times at the strip only for lower times.

My friend did it him self this winter in this dads garage actual car garage so it was easer.

Been there & done that 4 years ago! Never got a ticket yet! But, then again I installed a resonator (glass pack) to quiet it down a little too.

I had a local speed shop do the installation. All I had to do was sign a simple (and I mean simple) form that states I know this is for off road use only. Then their butts are covers and they happily did it for me.

Not much; the muffler does most of that work.

The noise won't, but the smell might, if they're really bothering to look for disconnected cats and they're following right behind you down the street. Your exhaust may smell like a cheap lawnmower without the cat in place doing its thing.

Besides, if you're looking to reduce backpressure, a properly-functioning convertor doesn't contribute much to that.

Yeah I've been told that by just punching the CAT through and cleaning it out doesn't hurt at all. I thought having an open area like that would mess with the flow, but apparently it won't. Still dunno what I'm gonna do...gonna finish up my exhaust tomarrow. Its really bad, I never told you guys that. The shop that did it before was terrible. Now I'm getting it redone from the CAT back--all new.
