pushing brake, in order to shift outta park not working
When I push in brake to shift out of park it wont always let me. I have to repeatedly push in brake over and over and keep trying to shift into a gear before it finally lets me. Is there a little protection switch that needs replaced? and where is it? Its moms car and I think its a 99, not positive on year might have to find out and post if its needed.
Yes, the switch is in the brake pedal, connected to the brake light/cruise switch. The solenoid is near the gear selector, and is controlled by the switch in the brake pedal.
It'* likely a bad solenoid or a switch.
You may be able to override it by putting the gear selector in N before you start the car.

On mine (Olds LSS) the solenoid was unplugged when I bought the car. I just pulled out my cupholder and plugged it back together. Granted we have different consoles, but you should be able to find a white plastic plug somewhere in your console and cut the power to the solenoid. It'* a slight safety concern, but didn't we do fine for 50 years without shift interlocks?
Fuddyduddy - your advice on bypassing works great - if i turn key on and put in Neutral first then start car it goes into gear like normal. This will be a major saver until I can get switch replaced thank you and thanks to everyone who responded you guys are great.
