Relay is a MAJOR Pita. It'* basically at the base of the A pillar on the passenger side. Might be easier to access by disassembling your glovebox.

After helping Randy on the 97, hearing Bill say at the base of the pillar and PITA. He isn't pulling your leg. You'd be lucky to get at it from the glove box and as I think (that was my side of the car) about the only time it would look easy is if the dash were out.

Exhaust all other possibilites first

Have someone push the release button while you are looking/listening for the relay. You'll feel it clicking when you touch it. I had the same problem and after replacing the release in the trunk to no avail I discovered the relay. A faulty test light did not help the diagnosis either and lead me down the "yellow brick road". Didn't have to take anything apart to get at it as I recall.

well i can hear the relay audibly clicking near the glovebox so i'm assuming it works :?: i tried pushing the trunk release button and the actuator in the trunk lid just does nothing...even with the trunk open. i'm going to break out my digital multimeter and see if it'* getting power while my brother pushes the trunk release button on the driver'* door.

btw, should my SSE have keyless entry? my car didn't come with any remotes, so i'm assuming it doesn't. maybe i'm just missing them? (fwiw i have extra remotes from my Cutlass i could probably program for my SSE). heck i know the RPO for RKE is 'AUO' for my Cutlass....i'm gonna go check my SPID tag....

thanks again for the help.

It'* the relay. Mine did the same thing. Click but would not open. Swap the relay with the one next to it as a test.

You cars are probably not equipped with a lock out. I believe when discussed it was determined that 96+ models have the feature.

I disagree. When a relay clicks, it'* usually good. I've seen several types of these failures here, and NEVER a relay. The switch once, and all other times it was an electrical failure at the solonoid in the trunk, or a mechanical bind. Don't just change the relay. Have someone push the button and verify power at the trunk release solonoid (in the trunk lid) to verify relay operation.

All SSE'* came standard with Keyless Entry. Check your RPO label on the spare tire cover for "AU0"

FIXED! it turned out to be a slightly stuck actuator. i jiggled the latch a little and tried pushing the button again....sure enough the trunk opened up!

by the way i do have 'AU0'....now i just need to program one of my extra remotes.

thanks everyone.
