Default PCV O-ring on 1992 SE

A few days ago I decided to check and/or replace the PCV valve on my 1992 SE with 72,000 original miles on it. The valvewas just as clean as the day I put it in with the slightest film of on it. Anyway, I recalled from a few yeara back that in the Chilton'* manual it showed that O-rings were used, and depending on the engine two rings were used on VIN L and one ring was used on VIN 1 which got my a little curious.

Well, after removing the three small bolts that held the PCV valve cover on and taking out the spring secured to the upper portion of PCV valve the only O-ring I could see was at the bottom of the PCV housing and around a slight ridge in the manifold. If I had remove it I could have with a small screw driver or something. I didn't remove the O-ring but from what I could easily see it was simply flattened (as I guess it should be considering the PCV valve is basically pushed against it with a spring) but it was not damaged to the point where it'* cracking or anything.

My question is if I should decide to change the O-ring whether or not it'* supposed to be located where it is - meaning with the PCV valve sitting on top of it inside the manifold - or should an O-ring be situated somewhere around a portion of the actual PCV valve?

Thanks!

The o-ring should be around the PCV.
