I would change the plugs, wires and fuel filter.

had the same thing on my 97 Bonne 113K miles. I would have bet that it was tranny-related. I replaced the plugs and put in MSD coils and 8.5mm wires and it solved the problem. in fact, i swear car runs better now than when new. MSD is the way to go!

well i didnt change out the plugs or wires...maybe eventually but right now my dad talked to a mechanic and he said that it was the overdrive lock up (when the overdrive goes into lock up it puts it in the most fuel effecient mode) he told us that we could unplug this wire that connects to the tranny (the wire comes out facing towards the headlights of the car) and that would stop it from going into od lockup. so we did that and it is fine now...the service engine light comes on once in a while but it doesnt jerk around anymore. any thoughts? could this be bad....i didnt try changing out the wires and plugs because we pulled out a plug and it looked fine and the wires had been changed. (also my dad was dead set on it being something to do with the tranny...

Well, besides lower fuel milage, I don't think you'll have much of a problem. You might want to scan for that code that'* being generated to make sure it is nothing serious. It might be pointed to the Torque Converter Clutch which you just disengaged. Also, I would treat the Trans to some new oil and a filter.

that'* what they told me also. but i think the lockup going bad might throw a code, not sure..anyway i think plugs, coils and wires is a fairly cheap thing to try first..can't hurt.

ok this week ill swap out the plugs and wires that shouldnt be too hard and plug that back in to see if it does it thanks guys!

ok i changed out the wires and plugs and the car is perfect now the engine runs great 
i also plugged the tranny lockup control wire back in thanks a bunch guys!! i should have listened to u from the beginning but i guess its a learning experience heheh thanks again!

also i wanted to add that the plugs i took out were bosch :? another example of them not being good in the 3800s and i also found that the wires for #3 and #6 were switched somehow but i put them in the proper places. thanks again!
