Another UIM thread with a few specific questions...
This was previoulsy posted in the wrong thread.
I will be doing my UIM here in the next few weeks. I don't know if it is leaking or if the LIM gaskets let go, but I am losing significant amounts of coolant to the outside of the motor. Since the UIM is original and the motor has 192k miles on it, I figure replacing it is probably best. I have a new manifold in the garage with new gaskets and PCV valve. I read the Techinfo writeup on replacing these and it talks about a coolant elbow that needs to be replaced too. What does this thing look like? There is a translucent plastic tube in the intake that came with the set. Is this the elbow that is being referred to? Finally, does anyone sell JUST a sleeve for the EGR passage and, since I have the older model, I assume I need the reduced diameter EGR tube as well, or am I mistaken?

The coolant elbow is on the end of your intake manifold by the waterpump. Here'* a picture and they are all the same. Whether SC or NA
That plastic tube you have is part of the intake for pcv passaging I believe.
To buy a sleeve/stovepipe, contact Bill Buttermore and Bob Dillon. Between the two of them you can buy the parts and get instructions.

We suggest replacing the coolant bypass elbow because the cost is negligible when you consider that you have remove the LIM to replace it (which includes everything to get to the LIM). It costs $7 from the dealer.
To find an aftermarket sleeve kit contact Ken Co Industries. http://ken-co.com/ The last I checked their kit was ~$75. Pretty pricey for what you're getting, IMO. I suggest contacting Bob Dillon for an improved UIM.

Alright, that makes sense. I planned to replace it because as mentioned, it isn't expensive. But I also didn't want to waste my time going to the dealer to ask for a part I already have. In this case I don't.
$75 seems a bit high for a steel sleeve and pipe. I will check with the Bob and Bill and see what they are asking for their parts. Installation of these parts seems pretty straighforward and since the UIM I have is brand new, I would rather modify it than swap it for a used one with the upgrades already installed.

One other item that'* worth mentioning over and over. The lower intake gaskets...I'd suggest getting them from the local dealer as they will be the new aluminum frame gaskets. These should be more durable than the old design plastic frame.
While there..they should have the coolant elbow in stock...

Given your situation, with a new manifold and all, I'd buy one of Bill Buttermore'* thin sleeves (.750 OD, .720 ID) and epoxy it in.
If you want to plug the throttle body heat before you install the manifold, which is what I'd do, yell in this thread and I'll give you parts number and instructions. It'* very easy.
concur with Boosty on the lowers, do them without fail, and use the new aluminum frame gaskets.
I wouldn't reinstall a stock manifold without either or both of the mods discussed above under any circumstances .

I just did my son'* '99 GP'* upper and lower gaskets. Used a Dorman upper with Bill Buttermore'* sleeve. Yours will be slightly different, but Bill'* idea worked well, and he was extremely helpful with instructions and tips.

If I use the .720 sleeve, will the stock stovepipe fit or do I need to get a smaller one? Does plugging the TB coolant passages allow for proper cooling of the EGR port, even with the sleeve?

I believe sleeving the EGR port settles all cooling issues for the EGR passage. Some here and on other sites have done so with no problems.

If you can't get your hands on a set of aluminum frame LIM gaskets, go for the FelPros. They're rubber composite, but hold up very well. I've been pleased with them.
