It'* a lot easier to pull the tranny to fix a rear main seal (if you have a hoist).

These engines were well known for leaky oil pan gaskets, do you guys think it could just be a pan gasket?

dont mean to interupt.. but would that seal leak if the car is seting for a month
i have a leak like that but its still leaking and i havint started the car in over a month
its a slow leak but you can see it on the ground

Normally you don't pull a trans with an engine hoist. You slide it out the bottom. Our subframes come apart. You support the engine with an engine brace.

I can't believe this! I had just got done from snooping around underneath mine, when I came in and saw this thread. I've got the same thing going on with the same exact bolt! It hasn't started dripping on the garage floor yet, but it'* gathering on that same bolt that'* in the posted picture.

Yeah... I was trying to remember what that brace was used for; now I remember.

I believe that you well know I was refering to a vehicle hoist Bill, not an engine hoist.

Anyways, what about the oil pan gasket? Could the oil be comming from the pan gasket?

Motorhead, 95% of the people here have no access to vehicle hoist. I happen to have an engine hoist in my garage and without you being a little more specific, that was my assumption. Now.. let'* stop the sarcasm and bickering...and move on to helping people.

It could be the oil pan, however..it'* much more common for the rear main seal to leak. Especially at this spot.

To those with the issue. Both cars I've had did this from before I got them. Simply wiping the oil pan off with a rag when you change the oil, keeps it from ever dripping on the ground.

i second that on dropping the tranny ethier way the both take about the same amount of time to do so its basicly personal perference
