Default Oil Filter Fell Off

Last week I had my 96 se in for an oil change at the local "speedy change" we'll call them. Well they put on the wrong oil filter and 70 miles later it blew off while driving. I stopped as soon as I smelled oil and realized I had no oil pressure. I also did not hear any knocking (but who knows, I about crapped my pants when it happened I might not have heard a train running over me). I had it towed to a service station, cleaned up and refilled/lubed. It knocked on startup, but holds oil pressure now and seems to drive ok. I was reimbursed for all my expenses thus far. However, do you think I am of line to expect a new engine because of this? How do I know that 1000 miles down the road I won't throw a rod or scorch something up? Just looking for some opinions.
Thanks

my advice would be to change your oil yourself. i mean its not all that hard and that way you can make sure its done right and even save urself some moolah.not a whole lot of moolah but moolah none the less.....i like saying moolah.

Unless you have a big truck like mine. (03 work duramax) cuz When I take it to "speedy" they also check all the other fluids and stuff.. and if you have ever check transfer case oil, its a *****.. But I change the oil on my cars. I hope you get a new engine out of it.

A friend of mine had a similar problem with an older GM truck... "Speedy" stripped out the drain plug on his pil pan, and tried to blame it on someone else. He was almost home when the plug fell out and he lost the oil. After numerous phone calls "Speedy" replaced the oil pan, and wanted to have someone strip down the engine and check for damage. My friend declined since there is a 3-year statute of limitations in this state, and the truck was running fine according to HIS mechanic. If the engine dies in the next 3 years and they can show it was from the oil leaking out he gets a new engine. So definitely contact the higher ups at speedy if not a lawyer.

Thanks guys,
Just to clarify a little bit --
There doenst seem to be any knocking or unusual knocking at any point now. The only knocking was on the first start up after draining what was left (if any, I am not sure) mechanic said 5 quarts low, so thats empty. I never recall any knocking EVER at any time even after an oil change and draining the oil. I am just afraid of what could happen down the road. I plan to consult a lawyer and see what my options are.
