Maybe your parking break is still on j/k

Actually, if that'* not it I don't know. Sounds pretty weird to me.

Actually the dinging part won't start until you've rolled 50 feet. Try it and see...

Assuming you haven't just left your parking brake on, you're low on brake fluid for some reason, and/or your proportioning valve has triggered an alarm because one of your two brake circuits are out (especially if your brake pedal seems to be lower than normal).

First of all, refill your brake fluid reservoir, which you will probably find is really low, and then figure out where your fluid is leaking out. Refilling the reservoir will probably not turn off the alarm right away, but if the leak is not too rapid, the alarm will eventually cancel by itself. (Mine does this off and on right now because I've got a slow leak out the back of the master cylinder.)

P.*. Alvin, if the fluid'* down so low that the alarm went off, you probably do have a slow leak somewhere, not just worn brake pads. You might want to look under the car, see if it'* dripping puddles anywhere, that sort of thing.

(Mine is leaking out the back of the master cylinder and dripping down the vacuum booster. Gotta get a new master cylinder one of these days. Anybody got a quote for number and price on a new GM replacement?)

Thanks much. I have to say I've been kind of underwhelmed with the Auto Zone stuff recently (including a really crappy rebuilt alternator that I didn't buy), but we have a Lee Auto down the street that'* been real good, with a lot of OEM stuff. Core charge is no problem; it'* not like I want to keep the old one for a doorstop or anything.
