Default My Car Is Dead, Please Help Me!

We have a 1992 Bonneville. 3.8 liter engine, 184000K. Husband replaced fuel pump. Prior to that the replaced all plugs due to intermittent rough driving feel. Would also take a few times for engine to turnover. Situation got progressively worse. Car stalled while going through a drive-thru and A/C was on. Waited and it started up again and drove fine for awhile. After a couple of weeks, car kept stalling around right corners and throughout a five mile drive home in the heat. Tranny fluid leaks all the time. This is the second transmission. Finally, after the fuel pump was put in, my husband thought problem was solved and took it to get smogged. Car died, restarted, they put it on a rack to do idle test, engine made a loud bang, and died right there. Had to have it towed and it sits in our driveway. Was going to get rid of it, but after reading many posts and how many issues seem to be caused by the crank sensor, I'm wondering if this could be the major source of our problems?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks much

I have a 92 as well but SSEi supercharged. First thing that concerns me is the loud clunk and stall. No use diagnosing things in the past if the engine just went kaput!! Does it turn over with no abnormal noise? ie physical engine part breakage? is there any engine oil leaking onto the ground from the engine?(connecting rod throught the block?) One of the first things I would do to ensure the integrity of the engine structure after that was a compression check. If that turns out alright then we can move onto fuel or ignition diagnosis. Do you know how to check stored codes in the computer? It involves using a paperclip in the Diagnostic Link Connector (under the steering wheel). The instructions are in the techinfo section as well as the code meanings. First thing though after a loud clunk and no-start is to assess mechanical with a compression check. OK?

Let us know how this goes.

BTW the tranny leak is probably the pan being loose. Tighten the bolts all along the pan.
Stalling along a long right turn...was the fuel tank below a quarter?

Get back to us with the compression test ok?

Hows the coolant level? Maybe a leaking intake manifold. Also check the fuel pressure regulator.
