Default MAF question for Danthurs or whoever

Dan I did your test/trick...unplugged the MAF and my car coughed and stalled in like 5 seconds after I unplugged it.
Couldn't even drive the car like that if I wanted to

Is that right?

car was running when I unplugged it and it threw a code..engine light came on.
Plugged the MAF back in and the car ran good again.

Ok to answer my own question......

I was supposed to have the car OFF before unplugging the MAF

So to those who wish to try this your car should be off before you unplug the MAF.
Than observe the idle for positive change if any.

here: or as Dan was suggesting
The most basic test is to unplug the MAF while the engine is turned off, and then start it. Most of the time it will run better without it if the sensor has failed. This is because the computer can do a better job of assuming what'* going on if it is not receiving a misleading signal. The case where this test will produce invalid results is if the MAF is completely dead or not sending any signal at all.

wow nothing like talking to yourself...lol

So Dan....what if your car runs bad after you unplug the MAF sensor?

It even started hard after I shut it off to reconnect the MAF.

I guess this is a case of 'if it isn't broke, don't fix it'

If there'* no change in how it runs, then the MAF is not the problem.
