The occasional pinhole leak in a coolant hose is impossible to see unless you are up to temp and pumping coolant through the system under pressure. Then, you will notice it pissing out in a fine stream or spray. Once the engine is off and you're looking at it, there'* no evidence again.

I'm not saying that was your problem, but I've had more than one rad hose fail that way.
