knocked solved... now its sluggish!!!!

just noticed this today... i have a LOUD knock coming from the engine... so loud i can't really pick out where it is coming from! none of the pulleys look like their wobbling, but i probably couldn't tell if they where. I did check all fluids and i notice the the PS fluid was pretty low. so i topped it off and the noise is still there... any ideas? my dad is on his way out with the truck for me to borrow till i get it fixed at least.

Oil pressure? What is it?

Darrel 01-30-2008 06:11 PM

while driving its at 40, accel, above 40, idle, just under 40.

OH, forgot to mention this. its important too, just had too much in my head.

it only makes noise at about 1000 RPM or LESS!!! (idle speeds) odd...

I may be wrong but this sounds like it could be the harmonic balancer. One of the resident gearheads should be able to confirm this for sure.

Darrel 01-30-2008 06:27 PM

that was one of my thoughts. I've heard of it happening but never heard what it sounds like...

Darrel 01-30-2008 08:50 PM

well my dad agrees with me that it might be the PS pump. it seems to become more "intense" when I turn the wheel. i'll know tomorrow, its at the mechanic again...

bill buttermore 01-30-2008 09:28 PM

When you turn the wheel, the PS pump is put under load. So the belt is harder to pull around its pulley. The belt is pulled by the crank pulley, or harmonic balancer. So, if the HB is failing -coming apart - applying an additional load at a low speed can be expected to make it worse.

PS pumps mostly whine when they go out or sometimes make a grinding noise. Not saying they can't make a knocking sound, but that would not be the most likely probability.

Darrel, grab ahold of you belt and see if you can move it by hand. If you can, then the rubber in the harmonic balancer has seperated an is making your knocking noise

Darrel 01-31-2008 12:57 PM

well, that was it. the harmonic baleancer was shot. BUT, sence the visit to midland it has started leaking coolent even worse and a ball joint is popping when i turn now... anyhow, the mechinac is working on it as we speak and i'm having everything done. ought to be an alright car when i'm done... ;)

Hey Darrel..... your harmonic balancer is bad
