Make sure the shifter selector boot (console only) is not getting in the way of the shifter fully returning to park. There is a cable on your year that keeps the key from releasing if the shifter is not in park.

Sometimes the key gets hard to turn because pressure is being exerted by the steering shaft against the ignition lock by the steering wheel lock. If this is the case, you can relieve the pressure on the ignition lock by turning the wheel a little bit as you turn the key.

happened to my 93......you can remove the shifter, and lift up on the console and try to adjust that cable
