Interchange trannies
Hang on a second.
We know you have a 4T60 at the moment. What is it that you are trying to put in?
If you were to swap up to the 4T65, then your pcm would need to be reprogrammed and the correct gear ratio for your new trans could be put into it at that time.
On the wiring. GM was very nice and kept the pinouts the same for the first 7 or so wires on the 4T60 connector and the 4T65 connector. The additional 5 wirres are easy to add by looking at the schematic.
I would suggest someone with a good ability was on hand for the swap. Overall though..I found it very easy.

According to the information I found, the 96 and 97 NA vehicles both have the 4T60E.
4 speed 4T60E automatic (1992 - 1997)
4 speed 4T60E-HD automatic (1992 - 1996)
4 speed 4T65E automatic (1998 - 1999)
4 speed 4T65E-HD automatic (1997 - 1999)
Here is what Billboost posted earlier in this thread:
4T60E 92-96 Supercharged 3.8L
4T65E 97-03 Supercharged 3.8L
4T60E 92-97 Naturally Aspriated 3.8L
4T65E 98-05 Naturally Aspriated 3.8L
This also says the 96 and 97 both have the 4T60E.

The only thing we aren't accounting for is the gear ratio.
In the naturally aspriated or non-hd transmissions the drive and driven gears were the same. The gearing differences were in the sungear and differentials. Therefore you could swap gear ratio rather easily. The HD trans had a different drive/driven combination and only one differential gear ratio. .
