Ignition lock cylinder replacement
 

Hey all,
I have a 92 bonneville that I'm changing the ignition lock cylinder on. If I replace the lock cylinder with one that doesn't use the "pass key" will the car not start when I put everything back together? And what do I do with the two white wires connected to the old cylinder?

The car will not start without a passlock cylinder....unless you hot wire it by giving it the chip code it wants to see.

Take a DVM, set it to OHMS, and measure the value of the pellet on the current key. Once you get the value, run to Radio Shack and purchase that value resistor. Get under your dash and look for (someone correct me on this) 2 small yellow wires. Cut them, solder the new resistor in place and voila. VATS is now bypassed and you can now install the new lock/cylinder.

No, do not connect them together....

That pellet on the ignition key, is a resistor. The VATS system looks at the resistance value of that pellet and see's if its the correct one. I do believe its only 12 different values used here.

Better yet, take the key to Radio Shack and have them use a DVM. They should know how to do it.

When you get the resistor from Radio Shack, you will disconnect those 2 white wires and solder them to the resistor.
Here is the resistor...NOTE, this may not look like the one you buy. Only a couple cents.
