UPDATE--just got out from underneath the beast..all the bolts were loose..i re-torqued everything to 100 inch pounds as was called for in my Chiltons guide. Maybe that will buy me some time until i can get a decent gasket..upon further inspection, it looks as if AAMCO used a crap cork gasket..
