Series II L36 drinking coolant, no visible leaks is generally a good indication that the upper intake manifold has failed or there is a gasket that has failed.
In any situation, a new redesigned UIM and full gasket set including lower intake manifold gaskets generally is the way to go, however, you may want to further diagnose the problem on that car
Moved to 92-99 for the gurus to play with for a bit

I would highly suggest to him that he quit driving it now and drain the oil ASAP. Otherwise, it might cost him an engine.
I suspect the UIM AND LIM gaskets need to be replaced. I wouldn't do one without the other, that'* for sure.

I assume the level on the dipstick is the level when not running?
If so, that'* a gasket issue. An UIM would fill the cylinders and cause a hydrolock. Either way, I'd question the motor depending on how long he'* driven it that way.
