Well I have to send a big thank you out to OLBlueEyesBonne I just took my Bonn out and it did the same old thing this time in about 5 miles. So I did your trick and Walla I got overdrive back, used cruse just like you do and no problems. So I tried without cruise and sure enough, it kicked out and would not go back in OD. So once again I shut it off and restarted it and Walla OD again. So this time while I had it on cruise I manually shifted it in and out of OD shifted fine well maybe a little slow but it shifted. After doing this 10 times I shut off the cruise and drove normally it stayed in OD so I kicked, the old Bonn down, it down shifted just fine and guess what it went back in to OD when I let off. I thought It must have been a fluke so I did it again no problem. So now, I was trying to make it stop shifting but every time it went into OD. Now the true test is going to be when it cools down will it all start back up again so keep your fingers crossed for me. I will keep you all posted on what I find out I still plan on putting it on the scan tool this weekend and pulling the codes. One last question obviously this tranny did not get used very much being it only has 47000 miles on it could it have been just sticking from lack of use? I would think it did not get into OD much.
Again Thanks allot to all and I will let you know what I find out. Oh, I also used the idea on a separate thread to slam the door while holding down the power window button to get it unstuck nice tip. I’m having a good day!!!

Update: I let the Bonn cool down and tried it again. Just my luck it all started again. So I tried the same thing as before (neutral, turn off restart use cruise control) had to do it twice then it started working fine again. So it’* the scan tool for me tomorrow.

I thought it was time for an update.
I spent the weekend trying to figure out just what conditions it takes to make the car stop shifting into OD. Well this is what I figured out. If you drive normally up to 50-60 and allow transmission to shift into DO and lock up the converter all is fine but if you then coast down to 35-40 and load the engine like driving up a hill it will give a slight shudder and will no longer shift into OD. I did this at least a dozen times to confirm it. I also tried it in 3rd and same thing happens but if you do it in second it is fine and will allow you to shift back into OD. So what is common to both 3rd and 4th? I think the converter will lock up in both gears so it could be a slipping of the converter? What tells the tranny to unlock the converter and is this my trouble? All feedback is needed and useful. (I know I still need to pull the coeds)

Hello, this is an old thread so I don't know if it is monitored. (I am new to discussion groups.)
I have a '95 SSEI with the same OD problem. Had the car since '96, 130kmiles.
First time for OD problem was 2years ago, then off & on for a while, now mostly on.
I also found turning the key off and on will allow the OD to engage, but only for a short time. I will try the Cruise control trick.
I have had a scan tool put on it w/no codes, but not while driving. Will have to invest in one I suppose. (Any recommendatons?)
Was there a final diagnosis on this problem?

I have not fixed my problem yet but I will soon be spending more time working on it.
I tried some Trans X to see if it would help (a suggestion from a friend) but it did not help. If any one is still watching this thread is there a way of stopping the torque converter lockup? It seems there are a few of use with this problem I hope we can figure it out together. Thanks

Hello again,
Not sure of the torque converter'* relationship to OD, but I am thinking the problem of dropping out of OD is connected to the electronic controls, maybe the computer. But if there are errors generated the codes are not present later. I don't have a code reader to take for a ride.
I have not had a chance to check the cruise control method but had already confirmed that turning the ignition off & on works for a short while.
If the ignition effects it and the cruise control keeps it from dropping out of OD, then I don't see how it can be part of the tranny hydrolics.
I look forward to other ideas and findings.
best regards,

The torque converter locks up electronically and the computer monitors it for slippage. If the computer detects slippage it will lock out OD to protect transmission. This is what I believe is happening to mine. I'm no transmission expert so please let me know if this is incorrect.
Thanks

Thanks, that helps.
Ya think that the cruise control defeats this protection mechanism?
In any case I went for a 20 mile drive in the heat yesterday. On the way I used cruise control, and no problem with OD.
On the way back, when it was considerably cooler I started out with no cruise control. About 10 miles later it jumps out of OD. I cycled the ignition, got OD back, went into CC, and no more problem.
Any tranny experts out there that can comment on possible damage being done?
Thanks again,
