Yes i have the gasket as well, for our bonnies does it go on top or bottom of stat?

Chad, you need a fiber (gray) gasket for the housing, AND a rubber ring for the rim of the thermostat.

Remove the housing, stuff a rag in the hole in the lower intake (after removing the old stat), and CAREFULLY clean off the old gasket from the lower intake and water outlet (stat housing).

Reverse.

I'd strongly suggest you buy Chiltons #28200 before doing this. It'* less than $15 bucks at the auto parts store.

such as coolant anywhere? and what would i call the gray gasket for the upper intake when i got to buy it?

Make sure you do it with the car cooled off overnight preferably. Otherwise coolant will come up when you pull the t-stat. Ask for a thermostat gasket from the dealer or an autoparts store. You will loose some coolant (less than a cup), so do it on gravel preferably, and have some kitty litter to soak up the stuff you spill. I have never screwed with the bleeder valve, just pour more coolant in when everything is assembled again. Pour slowly and stop when you hear bubbling. You want to get all those bubbles out. Then make sure you have plenty in the overflow tank. Here is a writeup on it.

Willwrens manual tip is a good one, there will be minimal coolant if the rad is cold. The little you might spill is easily cleaned up with a rag.

How does this process differ, if at all, for my NA 93?

Identical, Kyle. No difference. Not even in parts.

If I replace the stock 195 thermostat with a 180 degree thermostat from some place like Discount Auto, or NAPA as suggested (Is there a difference? Should I look for a specific kind of thermostat, besides being 180 degree?), is there anything else that should be changed after replacing the thermostat in the way suggested? My dad thought maybe the 'puter would need to be adjusted or something. He'* doing it this weekend while I'm up with my mom in Georgia, so I want to give him the right and complete info Thanks again guys!

Nothing else to change or adjust. The 180 will also only help you as long as you have air flowing through the rad. Moving in the car, or with the fans on. City driving, it won't help a bit.

you can turn the fans on by turning the AC to auto, correct?
