Default Hood removal

I want to replace my hail damaged hood but when I went to the junk yard I ran into a problem with the open assist rods. I can't figure out how to remove them without breaking the clips that keep them on. Is there a special tool or something simple I can do?

Loosen the retainer clips first, then spray them lightly with a lubricant. After that, pry the assist rod off. Don't fully remove the clips.

It'* an easy 2-man job as long as you have a 2x4 to prop the hood up.
