Drove the SSEi to Flint, Mi. on 7-23 for the Buick Centennial with my Buick-freak brother.
A good time was had by all, but boy, what terrible roads!!
The SSEi made 28 MPG on the trip up and performed flawlessly except for one thing:
On our last night there I noticed that the light on the radio had gone out. The radio and CD player still work fine, but I'm out of luck if I want to know the time, present radio station, or CD track.
After getting home, I noticed that if I looked closely, at just the right angle, a very vague reading can be made on the radio. This helped me restore the radio presets changed out of town, but does me no good at all while driving.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem?

i got the same problem man. ive heard it discussed before here.seems like its a real pain to change or the only way to fix it is to get a radio.im not sure though so dont quote me on that.

Needs a new bulb - Pull the radio and the front panel off of the radio. A good partsman at GM should be able to get the part number for the bulb. I had no luck, so I soldered in my own bulb from an auto parts store. You can use Radio Shack too.

The bulb takes from 6-8V, a 6V bulb will do fine. I have had a simular problem, it is pretty hard to replace the bulb. I have taken apart the radio several times, so post if you run into any difficulties or if you find a bulb that works. I was never able to find one that worked for me.

I soldered a 12V bulb in - Works good!

My display would go out and if you hit the side of the console it would come back on for a while. I put up with this for about a year, then took radio apart and found that the socket that holds the bulb made poor contact to the pc board, and the wires from the bulb made poor contact with the socket. I removed the bulb from the socket, cleaned the long wires on it and soldered it in place directly to the pc board with a blob of clear silicone to support it. Works fine now.
