heater core

my 92 ssei has a bad heater core

how hard is it to change?

BillBoost37 03-05-2006 02:44 PM

Book says you pretty much
Disconnect the hoses
Remove glove box
Remove lower hush panel
Remove hvac programmer
Remove core box

Bill, would that apply to a '99 as well?

Also, has anyone just paid the dealer to do it, and if so, what'd it cost?

thanks.

BillBoost37 03-05-2006 09:47 PM

That was from the 1998 manual

Hmmm. That's not so bad. Maybe I'll invest in the clamp tool after all. Core itself is about $60 at the parts puppies.

Those hoses look molded to me, not plain old heater hose off the roll. Anybody know?

hoses

They do look like molded hoses. I would say they are. A good slip joint plyer should remove the clamps or you could just break off the plastic neck from the core,

BillBoost37 03-06-2006 08:02 AM

They are molded and specifically upper and lower labeled. When pulling them out...label which end was at the engine. Trust me ;)

The spring hose clamp tool...while you've done 100 jobs w/o it.. you will fall in love with this tool on this job.

These pictures show the heater core in the car and its location. Scroll down through the posts.

Of course, it's not quite as easy to get to with the dash in place, but I've done worse jobs. I've been under there to replace the programmer.

The programmer screws to two of the plastic studs sticking out on the curved corner piece over the heater core then you're ready to take the cover off.

I had to have the heater core in my 99 replaced two years ago. Had 78,000 miles.

I wasn't about to rip into the dash so I paid a rebutable shop to do it. Cost $275 including parts for them to replace it.

BillBoost37 03-06-2006 11:07 AM

Yeah..that pic is Randy's 97 donor car in the Franken project.

Book doesn't seem to say the dash needs to go anywhere.
