First, 93 was a strange year.... If you have the SC 3800 in 93 you got the single wire O2...

If you had the TPI 3800 NA for 93 more than likely you have the 3 wire heated O2...

1994-99 all had the 4 wire heated...

The systems changed a bit from 93-94...

On the 94-95 the engine did not have to be up to temp to hit OD and lockup... You could take off on the interstate with a cold motor and as soon as you were at the right speed you could have both OD and Lockup... But I think that has a bit to do with the reading from the 4 wire heated O2 sensor, which made for slightly better fule economy and emission...

On the 87-92 for certain with the 1 wire sensor, The PCM would not apply the TCC clutch in OD untill the engine met the required operating temps, I believe it was between 120F and 150F...

93 I am unsure of...

94-95... It could be frigid and you'd still be able to impend TCC lock with the right speed and I believe info from the O2...

In that case you should have a single wire unheated O2....

My guess is that it could help to a small degree... But if you have a new sensor or a sensor that is in good shape you should see the O2 start swing the voltage up and down leaving you with cross current counts, with a good sesnor this usually happens fairly quickly...

If we were to talk about the 94-95 Heated O2, The PCM does use this info early on after starting the car, the 94-95 is not dependant on the engine to be within a specified temp range before the TCC can lock... When the PCM sees the right signals from the O2, MAF, TPS, VSS the PCM can lock the TCC depending on varying conditions such as roadspeed... This also improved overall MPG'* and helped reduce emissions yet again.. Not a lot, but every little bit counts...

Example... If it was 40F ouside, and the car had sat all nite, I could start it and pull right onto the highway and have the TCC lock with a still cold engine...


I didn't really have the time to read the link, but I do see that it had an explanation on how to do the wiring... Is there a performance gain to be added? Or better tuning ability?

I'm not 100 % certain on the 93 SC models, but iirc the engine management still wants to see the car at 140-150F beofre it will allow the TCC to engage, totally independant of the O2

After going back and reading the link a little better...

No where does he say how old the O2 was to begin with... A slow and Lazy O2 can cause a lot of issues, and the engine could have been running rich... Also the 2.8 and 3.1 operate diffrently then do the 3800'*... On these older cars closed loop is dependant on engine temps... And the new sensor, well I'm sure it helps get the O2 signal there a bit faster as its heated...

I just get the feeling his car was running rich, and wasn't being leaned out by the ECM as the O2 was most likely close to death... And the replacement brough back the capeability for the for the ECM to better meter or control the amount of fuel needed...
