If done properly, you can bypass the VATS with resistor(*) and a relay while the remote starter is operating. Otherwise it will function normally. The resistor & relay idea is less expensive but may fail from time to time. The modules, such as the Bulldog unit, will be more reliable. Most units will learn the resistance and make small adjustments as necessary. The cold weather and other variables can affect the total resistance.

The tolerances in the VATS system are very wide. Cold weather will not change the resistance value of a resistor enough to cause the VATS system to not pick it up. If it changed 10% one way or the other from the center value (in this case the resistance in the key) you'd still be fine. These systems weren't desgined to meet military specs so bypassing it with a resistor alone is fine. I installed mine in 60º weather and have seen 0º already this winter with no problems.

another question i have is the ignition switch and the wire harness visable from under the driverside after i remove the kick panel? how would i identify the wire harness for the ign swtich? is it easy to spot?

After you remove the under dash cover, you will see the bundle of ignition wires. PLus, I would never go in there without a test light.

just a comment.

My girlfriend had a remote starter installed (don't know the brand) on her 96+ bonnie and sometimes her car will not start at random times because of it.
