Default gears missing *final update*

i was driving today on the highway and i suddenly lose 4th gear and the TC. it would come and go the whole trip. what the hell is wrong?

first, we thought it was a bad clutch for 4th. then we thought it was the TCC. now we think it may be the vaccum regulator.

any inputs?

The first question with something like this is what does your fluid look and smell like?

The second question is which trans does your 97 have? It was a mixed year for the L36. By the sound of your problem, I'd have to guess 4T65E.

When driving, and you lose 4th/TCC lockup, if you pop it in Neutral, turn off the car, restart, and drive, does it come back?

One more thing.....NOT the vacuum modulator. If it'* disconnected, the shifts will be firmer. It can POSSIBLY cause you to miss a shift if it fails in a manner that it lowers line pressure, but I don't think it'* likely. This would indicate that you have a 4T60 I suppose (coffee is sinking in slowly here).

Do 4T65e'* have vacuum modulator?

Is there any chance the engine coolant is too cool to allow 4th and TCC to engage. Is the temp dial reading like it always did. I'm thinking the computer doesn't allow 4th and lockup until a certain coolant temperature is reached and the outside temps were relatively cool yesterday in Ind/Ohio.

4T65'* don't have the Vac modulator. The PCM itself controls this in the 65'*. Considering the fact that he asked about it, he must have a 60, in which case the temperature will not have an effect on 4th or lockup. The only thing it has an effect on is limp mode for high temps.

i dont know what temp the tranny was running at, but whenever i would stop somewhere. when i would get back in and drive it would come back. and randomly it would have 4th/TC then it would go away.

Forget temp, check your fluid, try my advice above about a shutdown on the roll and restart, and consider taking it back if it'* under warranty.
