GEARHEADS HELP PLEASE! pcv valve not going in right
while trying to change my pcv valve i discovered two things: i had no spring in the pcv assembly (is that bad?), and i can't get the thing back together. the store sold me the wrong part, but i can't even get the old one back in right. it acts like the valve won't go back down far enough to get the cap on. i need the car tonight preferrably, but definitely need it for tomorrow!!! help!

thank you... i'll keep trying to screw with it in the meantime. according to my chilton'* the 96-99 vin K motors have a spring in the assembly... wonder where mine went? but like i said the main goal is to just get the thing back together the way it was

ok, i got the valve back in properly, but then i partially broke the stupid cap that goes over top of it! i'm having a heck of a time. the thing that really worries me is the lack of a spring... could it even run without one?
EDIT:
p/n of the pcv kit they sold me is 17113515. i believe this to be the incorrect part. am i wrong?

Here'* the removal and reinstal directions;
Remove the injector sight shield from the fuel rail and intake.
Remove the MAP sensor (1).
Use a 16 mm socket to press the access cover (2) down and rotate 1/4 turn counterclockwise.
Remove the access cover.
Remove the PCV valve (3) and the O-ring (4) from the intake manifold.
Installation Procedure
Install the PCV valve (3).
Replace the O-ring (4) if necessary.
Install the access cover (2).
Install the MAP sensor (1).
Install the sight shield.
From the diagrams there isn't a spring under the valve. Is it because you're forgetting to rotate the access cover while installing?
Hope this helps...

well, now i've got conflicting information. the chilton'* says there'* a spring, and the kit i got included a spring, and the guy who sold it to me looked it over and even pulled out a brand new UIM to do a mock-up. now you tell me there is no mention of a spring in your FSM, and the thing didn't have a spring when i pulled it apart, so i don't know what to believe. all i know is i have the spring installed right now between the sensor and the access cover, and it seems to have solved the problem of having vacuum when i pulled off the oil fill cap. is it bad to have the spring on there, or did the guys who replaced my UIM about a year ago leave the spring off on accident?

spring
My 96 has no spring.
I leave the map sensor installed and use a large slip joint plyer to gentley grab the two
tabs below the sensor and turn a qtr. turn to remove.
Apply motor oil to the large seal for assembly being carful not to crack it you must push
down and turn it with the plyer. Its a bit tricky but with patience it will go.
I had a little hard time at first with mine.

hrmmm.... i'm leaning toward the fact that it'* supposed to have a spring. too many factors point toward it. i had some kind of vacuum leak before i put the spring in, and now it seems to be cured. plus i had the guy at the delco store double check the part #, and sure enough he gave me the right pcv kit for a 97 NA bonnie. so i'd say it'* supposed to be there. i think i'm gonna solve this once and for all and just ask will!
