Hey guys my gas gauge stopped working it just sits a full and i know it not full i been driving it for a week, i would like this problem fixed because i am going on a road trip this weekend. Any ideas on how to fix

Sounds like it might be the sending unit, which is located on the fuel pump and in the tank.

Would a faulty sending unit cause off readings? It knows when it'* empty, but above that, it'* very liberal with its readings.

I get over three hundred miles on a full tank of gas. My 1997'* fuel gauge will stay at or above full for over a hundred miles, drop to about 2/3 after two hundred, and crawl into the yellow after three hundred.

It might be sticking, but it sounds like its still working well enough to keep you advised of your fuel status.

I have a similar problem and I've opted to top it off every 300 miles. that gives me about 30 to 40 miles of unused autonomy in city/county driving. Sounds like your sending unit needs a looking at.

Mine in my '93 is also some what questionable and I do fuel at the 300 mile mark also! That leaves a pretty substantial "cushion"! I do something near 110 miles a day for the work commute and fuel comes from three different choices for a Shell fill on the way!

I've already seen that; that definitely helped. I don't think there'* too much difference between the 1997 and 2002 Bonnevilles as far as fuel sending is concerned.

There was a good song on the radio, but my fuel gauge was in the yellow zone. So I pulled into a gas station, and shut the engine off but left the key in run -- power (and radio) but with the engine off. I started filling up, and noticed my fuel gauge going up. Normal, I figured. I decided to measure it.

The 1997 has a 16-gallon tank. At 1/4 on the gauge, 4 gallons had gone in. At 1/2, eight. At 3/4, twelve. At full, fourteen. The pump kept going to just under fifteen gallons, and then shut off.

Interesting. While it'* always been a bit flaky, it seems like it now shows a gallon more than I actually have. I'll keep driving and report back. I still plan to replace it, but what are the odds that I recalibrated my fuel sender?
