Yup, gas gauge is a problem on 88-91, I replaced lines, tank, sending unit..the whole 9 yards and still will read from full to 1/2 full...and stop.....to fix would require removing the dash and put a new guage in.....the quote I got $600+ yea right...!
I just reset my trip odometer every time I fill up and fill it back up around 450k
(until I get the time to replace the guage come springtime myself)

Now that I think about it, my gas gauge is wonky as well, it tends to sit past the full line for about 60-80km, then it likes to jump all over the place. Anywhere within a range of 1/4 or a tank, up and down and never really sitting still.

When I accel slowly, the guage jumps ahead, when I accel hard, it drops...
I figured it was the sensor in the tank or something reading fuel levels that slosh around in there.

Anyway, I live it with, I never let is get less then 1/4 left in the tank before another fill up. I had a loss in fuel effciency lately. So today I went for an oil change and I got them to totally recondition the fuel system. Yikes..the throttle body was BLACK...oh man, I was embarrased. Every 25 000km...getting that done. Now I have more power and hopefully better fuel consuption. hahahah, based on what the guage says. At least the antiquated trip meter works. plus/minus 450km...more gas!!!
