I wondered that same question upon getting my 95 ssei as well. The fuel gauges are quite inaccurate and no where near linear.

Most I ever squeezed in w/o being over the red was 16gallons.

Most I have put in my car is around 16 gallons. When I was down that low when I went around corners I would lose fuel pressure. I think my car has problem with the fuel strainer or fuel pickup.

Master... sounds similar to Mortehls issues when his pump was beginning to fail. However since you have a 92, it could be any of the above.

I was always under the impression that I had a 16 gal. tank too...

I wonder, did they vary in some models/years?

Mine takes 18. It still has about 2 gallons left when the gauge reads dead empty.

They stayed the same through all years. It'* a matter of how the gauge reads for you and how daring any of us feel to push the car further when the gauge say "You are going to be walking soon"
