Ok i've tried two cables, a home brewed one, and one built with a simliar circuit, but enclosed nicely and came with software.

I have checked the pinouts on the ALDL pictures that have been linked here, and I have checked the box for it. I guess the only one i'm not sure of, is the 12v power, which is on the connector "k" of the ALDL.

I haven't gotten carbytes 2.0 to work, or even recieve chatter, i've also tried turbolink and datamaster, again with nothing.

Here'* my cable.

Could it be my laptop'* serial port? It'* a Dell D600.

What aren't you sure of exactly? Do you mean you're not sure which pin on your car'* connector is actually +12V? I'm assuming you don't have a multimeter handy. Aside from checking it with a meter, I don't know of any good way to verify the pin location.

Of course, after reading that guy'* description of his cable again, I'm not sure anything exists at pin K on the car'* side. He said he moved an unused pin to that location and ran +12V at ignition on to that location. Does he mean that location on the car'* plug? Or an external source plugged into his little link box?

It'* highly unlikely, but it'* possible your laptop may have the same problem my Windows CE PDA had -- an inability to use nonstandard data rates (8192bps as opposed to 57600, 19200, 9600, etc). But I doubt it. Even with my PDA I was at least getting some data transfer, it was just all nonsense.

I also noticed on that cable you purchased that there are two serial pins, presumably one for 160 baud and one for 8192 baud. Make sure you're using pin 'M' if you have control over which of those two is used.

Aside from that, you know as much as I do at this point. The only other suggestion I'd have is maybe to go even simpler with the software and try the DOS Probe software available from the EFILive/CarBytes site here: http://www.efilive.com/downloads/downloads_4.html

Experiment with the different probe command line options, see what happens. You won't get to see any meaningful information, but at least it'll tell you if there are bits on the wire.

Yeah I plan on using my meter to test the 12v and gnd, next time i'm free.

I couldn't find the Probe for the life of me for some reason, thanks. I still don't understand why i'm not getting anything though. Here'* my .ald file, it corresponds to this .ds (open with notepad) for the 93 N/A.

I will add that Turbolink 4.0 couldn't find the cable/device.

At this point, your ALD file isn't part of the picture -- if you're not getting data, your problem lies either in hardware or your comm setup. Aside from checking with probe, the only other troubleshooting suggestion I can think of would be to try and find a serial port spy -- a program that will open the serial port with whatever settings you'd like and allow you to send and monitor the raw data on the line. Something like the VBHexTerm found on this page:

http://www.beyond-designs.com/PC_ports.htm

although I'm sure there are more friendly packages out there, I don't know of any good ones.

Well the 12v built into the box isn't 12v on a bonnie, so we're doing some modifying.

Checking right now...
