ex-Mother-in-laws old car - tranny, engine hot other problem
Hey ladies and gentleman --
First off, I thought I was the only person on the planet who not only loved my Bonneville (1997 SE) but thought it was one of the best overall cars ever made in terms of comfort, MPG, speed and styling.
I was given this car when I was married by my millionnaire ex-mother-in-law who lives 6 houses down from me. She has to drive by it twice a day now and I know from mutual friends it bugs the heck out of her. So any help to keep my baby running from you guys and gals, is appreciated.
My transmission runs hot, I see this is a common problem. I have had the oil flushed and changed 3 times in the last 13K miles because it tends to start slipping on long trips. I have never wrenched much so I am wondering if I should do this on my own as far as a cooler added. That includes an oil cooler and new radiator (core is leaking).
What should I buy in terms of these parts specifically in the next few days?
I baby this car, but the engine has started running hot, escpecially on hot days in traffic. Last year the fuel pump was extremely loud and they found out that it was about dead. It is starting to make that high pitch noise again. Once it gets to hot, it just stalls, no steam out of the engine and the like.
I need to get this running proper in a week. Should I take it to a shop to have it done if all I have ever done is change the oil and filter?
I know this is a lot, and appreciate the help. I want to keep her going for as long as possible but I also want to know I can get my two kids where they need to go without getting stranded.
Thanks again for any input and remember this:

The overheating can be a hand full of different things... Everything from a dirty radiator plugged with dirt on the outside, to Mud on the inside... Depends on how the coolant looks... also possible that the thermostat could be sticking..
The trans at 188k is getting a bit up there in the miles and may be on its way out.... I know my 95'* trans is going through slow death... I have done everything to get it to last as long as possible... Its not bad yet, but getting there...
Not sure what to tell you to do at the moment...
How Mechanically inclined are you?
