Default engine misses sometimes at idle

Hi guys i hope you can understand this:

sometimes when i start my car and let it idle for a few minutes it will start missing really bad and almost quit, but then it will go away after about 30 seconds or so and run completely fine after that. Also if I push the gas when it does this it will also go away until it goes back down to idle. It almost always happens when I let the engine warm up completely, then shut it off for a while, then start it again. sometimes it does it with the engine completely cold but not very much. it has been doing this for a few months now, but it has never thrown the engine light, and it always goes away. Well, 2 nights ago the SES light came on while I was driving, and ever since then, every time I come to a complete stop, and take off again, the car just bogs down or does nothing for a split second, then kind of jerks and takes off. My question is, are these problems related, or do i have 2 different problems on my hand, and how can i see which code is turning the SES light on?

Thanks for the help

My intital reaction is "How old are your plug wires?" Almost sounds like an inductive short to me.

Getting that SES code will help a lot, tho

Click on TECHINFO at the top of the page, then "Tech Know-How". There'* a procedure for pulling codes in 93 and older cars.

ok, i took the car to a shop today, and they scanned it for free. they said it was a cam sensor. how easy/hard is it to replace, and should i replace the timing chain with it since it now has 206K miles and i drive it pretty hard?

thanks for the help

Cam sensor is cheap and easy to replace. I think mine was $16 and took 10 minutes to replace. But i don't know if it would give you your symptoms.

What code did they tell you it was? 18? 41?

they said it was code 41. when i rev the engine up quickly in park, it does not respond for a second, then goes up, and it never did that until the engine light came on. also if i slowly rev the engine it is just fine.

great. i replaced the cam sensor, and the SES light came back on. so now im assuming that the resistor has fallen off or something? i really dont wanna pull the timing cover off. is there an easy way to replace the resistor? also, my old cam sensor had wear marks in it where the resistor passed by, and after running the engine for a few minutes with the new sensor, there were no marks what-so-ever, looked brand new.

thanks
