Default EGR gasket

I frequently get a code for EGR fault. Because of the cost of a new one, I am going to try to clean it. Is the gasket reusable or should I get a new gasket before I take it off? And any tips on cleaning it?

You will need a new gasket, mine crumbled instantly. Get it before yout ake it off, you won't be driving that car to AZ, that and it took the idiots there over a week to get their **** together to find my damn gasket! The gasket looks weird, and has like a wire mesh you can kinda see in the center, and doesn't look like a typical gasket, so if they slip you a cork POS, tell them to go back, and get you the right one. I hate idiots who can't do their job!!!!!!!

John, I've always just done mine in place without removing it.

You can take it apart on the engine, but for me, reaching across the engine while cleaning it, is a bitch, you guys are luckier since yours is located on the front of the engine. If you know how to clean one, its the same thing, just on the car. I'd just do it off. Bill will of course contradict me, but it is just easier, and the new gasket for $3 is worth the time/energy saved.

Contaradiction coming.......Justin, our EGR valve is totally different than yours. The digital EGR valve used from 91-93 (and apparently some 90'*) is very easy to clean. No disassembly necessary. The soloinoid shafts and springs are accessible on the car. Spray and scrub, lube with a light oil. That'* all I've ever done. Have to do it once a year but it works. Worked for many others, too.

Yeah I took mine clean off and soaked everything to get the crud off the first time. Oiling and cleaning with a small brush works now.

PS, I posted the gasket PN somewhere.... I think "Engine Part Numbers Please" was the topic...

I never had to replace any gasket. Mine was throwing codes, but the Scanner showed no problem with the EGR when it was tested. It was cleaned and still throws codes.
