OK back on topic. traced the vacuum and electrical lines/connections. All are attached. What next? I had opened the gas cap several times thinking the same thing.

There is a solenoid operated vent valve in close proximity to the evap canister. The vent valve should go shut when the pcm calls for a purge cycle routine. If you can locate ther open end of the vent line, put a stopper in it for troubleshooting purposes, it may or may not be the source of trouble. There is also a pressure transducer on fuel tank top that reports negative pressure to pcm when in purge mode. Check again closely for any vacum leaks in engine area.
