Just remove the exhaust hangers and carefuly support the exhaust. You should be able to get just enough movement to clear the exhaust.

You should be able to unhook it and just move it out of the way some. I dropped mine couple years ago to drop my tank. Never unhooked it from the engine.

Right. No need to remove or disconnect the actual exhaust, just the hangers. Then move it aside while dropping and replacing tank.

Unbolt the muffler at the hangers if it'* still orignial. If aftermarket...determine how they supported the muffler and lower it ..

Also unhook the two rubber o rings behind the cat .. that'll let it move a little more and then you can get the tank right out.

**update**

Well after wrestling with the tank we finally come to the conclusion that

1)I stink of gas and in dire need of another green monster

2) fuel pump does not good at all

Pipes were rusty and on the bottom of the pump is a brown filter I believe (resembles a tea bag) and it is discolored black with tiny silver particales covering it

That'* the filter sock and yup, it'* time for a new pump and sender unit. You'll be glad you did it. Make sure you replace your fuel filter when you're all done unless it'* recently new. That rust will have found it'* way into it too.
