For crying out loud. Why me? UPDATE-Fixed!

So I put in a NEW, not rebuilt, water pump last week when I did my timing cover and lower intake gaskets. I was replacing the gasket, anyway, since the gasket set came with a Felpro plastic water pump gasket, so I got a pump from Autozone. The $25 dollar kind. Since I would have mine off anyway, why not a put a new one on, right?

WRONG!!

Late tonight, it decides to make HORRIBLE noises whenever the car is not moving, in gear or not. I haven't had time to diagnose yet, I guess it could be the PS pump. I did notice and post about fresh bearing noise once I got it back together last week.

Where can I get a GOOD new water pump for reasonable cost?

JR's3800 talks about where he got his best pumps.

Hmm, no Bennette auto supply for a thousand miles. I'm off to Napa. Thanks, Jr. ;)

I decided to diagnose before I left. Took belts off individually. It is definatly the power steering pump. It has some in and out play, and a little clank when I first turn it.

Side note, my balancer pulley is developing a crack in the rubber near the rim, all the way around. Time to replace it?

It's a good time to, just cuz you're ripping everything else apart. Any rubber dust under it when you idle? Any shaking?

What's gonna bust next?

J Wikoff 06-05-2004 06:22 PM

Well, no dust that I've noticed. There is some rattling accompanied when I start. There is no play in the belts attributed to the balancer. I think it still has some time.

If anyting else busts, I'm gonna fix up the old Buick Somerset as a daily driver until I get a job. 30+ mpg on regular.

Aw geez. I went to Napa, ordered a PS pump. I specified, 92 SSE supercharged. I get home, check the part number. The guy ordered me a pump for a NA engine. I am very upset.

J Wikoff 06-06-2004 06:47 PM

He ordered me an NA pump with variable steering assist. Can I just swap the reserviors on them? Or do I need to cancel the order tomorrow, and wait till Wednesday or Thursday for the correct pump? As far as I can tell, they are the same, with different reserviors on them, but that is looking at the pictures on Napa's site. Anyone know if there is an internal difference?

I need this thing so my PS doesn't konk out on me!!!

J Wikoff 06-06-2004 07:46 PM

The more I look, it seems like somethimg else.

When I took of individual belts, the rattling would only appear when the PS and alternator belt was on. Well, I was watching my HB pulley, it seems to wobble a bit at idle, the whole pulley and bolt, and steadies when I give it some throttle, and the rattle goes away. Right now, I'm not sure it is the PS pump.

When the car starts, there is a pop/rattle that has been around for a while, and it became worse when this noise started on Friday. I thought it was a combination of the exsisting sound and the PS pump.

What am I gonna do?

J Wikoff 06-06-2004 08:44 PM

Well, it didn't really didn't do it yesterday when I was looking at it, but the outer portion of the balancer has about five degrees of rotation free of the center hub today. I don't think I need the PS pump, after all.

I JUST HAD THE STUPID THING OFF HALF A WEEK AGO!!
