A bad evap canister can cause a bad idle, and stalling. The evap should never need replacing or maintainence. If you got a crack in the thing you should replace it, it could leak gas(and gas fumes) into the engine bay.

and if you ever happen to hit a parked car on a huge frozen lake, and your backwheel ends up at a 45* angle, your charcol canister might explode causing black powder everywhere also causing everyone there to say wft is that stuff?
