Default broken trip odo

Cruisin around in my mom'* car while mines on blocks and I figure, okay, I'll reset the trip so I know how many miles I put on it. Yeah, that almost worked. Now the trip odo either doesn't work at all, or (if you push or down on the stick and hold it) it moves all of the numbers at once (ie: 000 to 111 to 222 to 333 etc...)

Any clues?

ya mines has been broken for like 5 years now. the gears get worn out stripped and therefore not turn the numbers correctly, mine just goes to 009 and just stops

Mine tried to commit suicide tonight. I had reset it and I heard an occasional click....click....click coming from the dash as I was driving. It took me a 1/2 mile to notice the trip odometer was still reading 000.0 and not climbing, so I pushed the reset again and it caught and started working.
