Default Broken Harmonic Balancer - Questions

Hey All,

Well, the Bonne must have been jealous that I had my pickup in the shop getting some new parts yesterday, because on the way home from lunch, it started making a gawd-awful racket! Made the car sound like an old VW Beetle at idle, it was embarrasing.

Was diagnosed as a broken harmonic balancer. In a brief search, I've seen this mentioned in a few different posts. Just curious if this was a common problem for these cars, and curious if once replaced, I should worry about it happening again.

My car has around 108,000 miles on it right now. Did the balancer have a life-span? It'* not a part I would have expected to wear out, but obviously something went wrong there. Thanks!!

It happens. There is a center hub and outer ring, connected by rubber, and the rubber degrades over time. The design of the replacement part is supposedly longer lasting.

Same thing happened to my car. Replaced it and fixed it immediately. Was an easy task especially if you have access to a hoist. I took it to Midas, and it cost me $200 for the part, and $30 labor.

It'* a rubber part with 12 years on it. Considering how low your mileage is..I'd think a little dryrot might have helped it along.

Not considered a wear item...but they do go.. replace and no more worries. It'* not an expected thing.

I own two Bonnevilles of different generations, and I've done 2 harmonic balancers. Your not alone.

Alright. Thanks everyone for the info. New one installed and ready to roll once again. Sounds like something I shouldn't bother worrying about after I finally pay my SHOP BILL off!!! :(

Wow!! That is an awesome price at Midas. Wish I would have known of a shop like that I could trust to do the job. It was. . . um . . . significantly higher. . . . at my dealer. Guess if I woulda had time to diagnose it myself more, I could have found someplace else to get it done, and saved a decent amount of $$$. Live and learn I suppose.
